History of Health, Education & Wellness Center

Founded in October 2009 by retired school teacher Janet Craft, the mission of this 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization is to encourage positive attitudes about healthy eating that can affect us physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

Health, Education & Wellness Center has taught groups of up to 30 children, ages 5 – 13 (and their parents), about nutrition, diet, food preparation and cooking skills. The ideal way for kids to learn about healthy eating and to acquire a taste for nutritious food is to let them grow their own fruits and vegetables in a community garden.

Bolstered by the recession, more and more Americans are planting gardens not only to eat healthy, but to save money. Inspired by the White House Organic Community Garden, the first since Eleanor Roosevelt’s "victory garden," we want to incorporate the same principles in our training sessions. Organic gardening eliminates pesticides and protects the environment from toxic chemicals that seep into our food and harm beneficial bacteria, worms, and other microbes in the soil.

In addition to planting and harvesting their own crops, children will be taught about nutrition, healthy cooking, baking, freezing, and dehydrating food. Plans are also in the works for community health fairs, exercise programs, monthly health presentations, and adult line dance classes.
